The Expendables / Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

The Expendables / Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Friday August 13th, 2010, 9:30am

Yay it’s Friday, new movie day! But I have to work later in the day, bummer. But not to fret The Expendables start at 9:30am, then I can catch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World at 11:30am. I don’t have to be at work till 3pm, so I can pull this off. I love early movie start times! Nothing like a quick two movie marathon before work.

The Expendables (2010) stars the manliest macho cast of action stars ever assembled. The stars included in this testosterone explosion orgy is Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke and cameos by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is a total dude flick. I can’t figure out why chicks will go see it. If you’re a chick please let me know. This movie not only stars Sylvester Stallone, but he also directs it. Sylvester Stallone gives us what we want as guys to see in this film, action, action, violence, humor, hot chick, cool car, action, action, and uh, oh yeah, more action! The plot is simple; a team of mercenaries head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator. The cast is great for this type of movie, everyone has their part and they play it well. My favorite “expendables” were Jet Li cause he was unexpectedly funny in this film, Terry Crews, cause he had the best relationship with his awesome weapon, and Mickey Rourke cause he was Yoda like to Sylvester Stallone’s character. This movie was very violent, and I liked it, cause it should be. There is a lot of great gunfights and explosions, even a cool card chase, but there are also some great hand-to-hand fights too. One of which will give wrestling fans a action chub when the to former wrestling/fighting stars Randy Couture and Steve Austin go at it. This movie was a lot of fun, it’s kinda like watching an old circus of the stars show, when it didn’t suck! If only it could have had Jean-Claude Van Damme, Wesley Snipes and the legendary Chuck Norris! I’ve heard rumors that a couple of these guys were offered a part. Who knows maybe they will show up in the sequel? The Expendables is a perfect popcorn movie. Have fun, I did.

The second film I saw during my short two-movie marathon was Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin and Anna Kendrick. Its a movie based on a graphic novel / comic book. Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend’s seven evil exes in order to win her heart. I knew this movie would be funny, but not as extremely funny as it turned out to be. Not only was this movie intelligently funny, its very witty, sharp and fast paced with lots of pop culture references and style. This may be one of the funniest movies I’ve seen all year. The chemistry between Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was very charming, but the best chemistry and dialog in my opinion was between Scott Pilgrim, his gay roommate, and Scott’s band mates. This movie had a video game theme to it especially when the fight scenes start up. Speaking of the fight scenes, they were very entertaining and clever. There are some funny cameos including when the seven evil exes start to show up to challenge Scott Pilgrim. This movie falls under the “do yourself a favor and go see it” category.

What a good day at the movies. I hope you guys see a fraction of the movies I do. But hey, if you don’t, that’s why I do what I do, so you don’t have too. Rock on movie peeps, and stay tuned for more move adventures!
