The Ice Man Movie Review / Best Movie No One Is Watching

Plot: The true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession.

This is one of the best movies in the theaters now that no one is seeing or talking about. I hope to change this. It’s getting lost in the Hollywood manufactured blockbusters.

This movie is based on a true story and the real life jail interview of convicted killer or hire Richard Kuklinski. This movie is based on a tell all book and a jail interview done with Kuklinski called “The Iceman Interviews” in 2003. I remember seeing this documentary several years ago and being mesmerized by the first hand dirty deeds that Kuklinski admitted too. If you get a chance I recommend you searching out this video and watching it for yourself. It is believed that Kuklinski has killed over 100 people. Most of which he couldn’t be connected to.

As for the movie, this new flick The Iceman, it really delivers on all parts. If you’re a fan of the mob movie genre, you will be pleased.

Lets start with the cast. Lead actor Michael Shannon nails the cold lying killer role of Kuklinski to the tee! He commands the screen at all times. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Michael Shannon’s work, you won’t be soon. For my nerdy friends you will know him as baddy General Zod in the new Superman “Man of Steal” 2013 movie by director Zack Snyder coming out soon. Michael can also be seen as a regular in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire as Agent Nelson. Michael is a great character actor. I especially liked him as Kim Fowley, the producer who launched the ultimate all girl punk band in the movie “The Runaways”. Michael Shannon has become one of my favorite actors, I wish him more successes, he deserves it.

The rest of the cast of The Iceman deserves mad props too! Winona Ryder plays Kuklinski’s unknowing wife. Ray Liotta plays an mob under boss. Robert Davi (best remembered as the Goonies gangster) plays a cool old school mobster. David Schwimmer (Friends) who is unrecognizable in his part (until he speaks) has a key role. But my favorite supporting cast member is Mr. Freezy played (and also unrecognizable) by Chris Evans, also known by my nerdy friends as the current Captain America! Chris Evans really gets to work on his acting chops in this movie. He’s one cool creepy dude in this flick. Other notables with cool parts is James Franco and Stephen Dorff.

Like I said, I believe this movie delivered on all parts, acting, script, costumes, sets, props and the music. The movie does a great job recreating New York & New Jersey from the 1960’s through the early 80’s. If you look closely in the back ground in one scene you can see the original World Trade Center Towers nearing completion in one scene.

As for Israeli born director Ariel Vromen, I’m not familiar with his recent work. He’s only got about six films under his professional directors belt. But his direction in The Iceman was superb. I hope he an Michael Shannon get some Oscar or Golden Globe attention. Check this film out now! It’s a breath of fresh air and an awesome dramatic ride!
