Quick Movie Reviews! Interstellar / Dumb & Dumber To / Big Hero 6!

Quick Movie reviews! Interstellar / Dumb & Dumber To / Big Hero 6!

Interstellar: Well acted, great cast visually interesting. But extremely borrrrrrring! Snooze. It was 2:45 min long! 45 min too long. Plus it had a lame Jody Foster Contact type of ending. Wait for video, or watch Contact instead.

Dumb and Dumber To:
Not as good as the original, but still had some funny moments. Like the first one, Jeff Daniels was funnier. Wait for video.

Big Hero 6:
See it now!! Visually amazing, especially in 3D. Great story with heart and humor! It’s a movie for everyone! I wanna see it again!

Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe Soundtrack!

Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe Soundtrack!! I’m dating myself, but not since The Crow and Pump Up The Volume soundtracks have I listened to a soundtrack over and over without getting bored with it soon after. What a great collection of 70s songs with awesome musicianship, and songs you don’t hear from pop music today. The original score by Tyler Bates is a great listen as well! I even got my daughter Camille wanting to hear “The dancing baby Groot song” (I want you back – Jackson 5). Thank you James Gunn (Guardians Director) for the work you put into a great collection of songs that hit all emotions.

Dragon-Con Atlanta 2014 Recap!!

Oh Dragon-Con, how I love our yearly affair. I’ve been going to Dragon-Con since 1999. I’ve only missed 2 or 3 years since then, and have gone 9 straight years. It’s one of the most important events I look forward to every year, even more than my own birthday. Dragon-Con is always Labor Day weekend, Friday through Monday.

Dragon-Con is the premiere cosplay convention in the United States. I would even bet on the best in the world. I’ve been to just about every large sci-fi fantasy conventions in the USA and a few over the border and overseas. If you wanna see the best costumes, Dragon-Con is where it’s at. The serious cosplay attendees usually bring a costume for each day of the four day convention. For me, I just usually do one new one each year. I may bring out an old one for fun sometimes. This year, and like last year, yours truly Mr Raider Nerd, did a Oakland Raiders nerdy mash up. Last year I was Indiana Jones Raider Nerd

This year I was Star Wars Mandalorian Raider Nerd!:

Most of the costumes done by others were way out of my league, but that’s ok. There is room for all types of cosplay participates. Yes, there are some very complicated and movie set professional costumes at Dragon-Con. There was many Marvel costumes from Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America, etc. as well as from the DC universe and many other popular movies and TV shows. The ones I like are the obscure and creative non mainstream costumes like these:

Im a big fan of getting autographs at Dragon-Con. The usual autograph line is 15 to 60 minutes. I was fortunate enough to get autographs from Patrick Stewart (Star Trek & X-Men), Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager) John Ratzenberger (Cheers, Empire Strikes Back, Toy Story), Walter Koenig (Star Trek TOS), Stephen Collins (Star Trek the Motion Picture) and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy). Trust me, I wanted more! But with the average autograph commanding $40 bucks or more, my wallet declined me of more autograph funds.

The highlight of the Dragon-Con weekend for me was meeting, getting a free autograph and picture of director James Gunn who directed the biggest movie, and best reviewed movie of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy. I love this movie. Just like everyone I know, this movie is so good for so many reasons, which puts this movie in a very special place in history. It was announced Friday that James Gunn was doing free autographs (1 per person) and 1 picture on Saturday and Sunday only. However, his autograph time was only limited to 2 hours on Saturday and 1 1/2 hours on Sunday. His autograph session on Saturday started at 2pm. I got in line as soon as the autograph hall opened up at 10am, 4 hours early! I usually don’t like to be in line that long, but it was worth it to me this time. I got to know my line neighbors and we had fun chatting, costume watching and holding each other’s line spots for bathroom breaks and short autograph lines nearby. When James Gunn arrived his line went by fast and was very cool with each fan!

James Gunn and his brother Sean Gunn did a great Guardians of the Galaxy panel on Saturday and Sunday. I had time and attended the panel on Sunday. The highlights included the topics of the Awesome Mix soundtrack, the announcement that he is writing the sequel, his charity to plant a tree for Groot and the alternate deleted Stan Lee cameo that was in The Collector scene. Here is a picture of the stand in actor that Stan Lee’s face would had been digitally added later:

The other highlight for me at Dragon-Con was playing games like Star Trek CCG (Collectible Card Game), Tribbles CCG, Star Wars CCG and Lord of the Rings CCG in the gaming hall with good friends and friends I haven’t seen since last year. I’m proud to say that I won both Tribble tournaments!!

One thing you should know about Dragon-Con if you haven’t been before is the hotels. Dragon-Con is not in you’re traditional convention hall. Dragon-Con is 5 or 6 hotels all with in a short walk within each other or next to each other that are also connected by skywalks. The hotels are another wonderful characteristic about Dragon-Con. Newbies can get confused and lost at first visit, but any Dragon-Con vet is more than happy and welcome to give directions. I can’t imagine Dragon-Con moving to a convention hall because downtown Atlanta is much apart of Dragon-Con as the attendees and guests. Dragon-Con brings much needed character, fun, and escape to the city of Atlanta. If you haven’t been, do yourself a favor an come to Dragon-Con in 2015. You will need a hotel, book now!!!

Guardians of the Galaxy most in depth spoiler free movie review!!!

Go see it. Then see it again. Everyone is watching it. Why aren’t you? It so good! Great balance between superhero and sci-fi movie. I recommend IMAX 3D. My review is late cause I’ve seen it three times. I’ve noticed so many new things after multiple viewings. I’m Going to see it again! It’s Marvel, so please stay till the tag scene at the end of the credits. I would give the Oscar to makeup right now! Just see it!!!!!!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) Spoiler Free Movie Review

I was fortunate enough to see a Wednesday night sneak preview this evening of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie thanks to my friend Kirsten who won free passes. I’ll get to the point and make this review sweet and spoiler free!

The new Turtles movie was produced by Michael Bay, not directed. This movie has already received a lot of backlash because Bay was attached to it. First off, if you’re a Michael Bay hater and think he “ruined” your childhood because of the Transformer movies, just like those that feel George Lucas ruined theirs with the Star Wars prequels, then avoid this movie cause I think most of you in this camp have already trained yourself to hate this movie before you even go see it. So don’t waste your time. I respect and understand your opinion, but I disagree with you.

I understand how passionate everyone is about this property. Trust me. I was buying the original magazine size black and white illustrated and violent not for kids independent TMNT comics from Eastman and Laird before they sold the TV and toys rights. Which then turned the TMNT property into a more family friendly versions, which most people remember and are fond of.

As for my take on the movie, here it is. I went in with low expectations, but still excited to see a new chapter in the TMNT universe. I did enjoy the movie for what it was, but it didn’t exceed my expectations. If you’re a turtle fan or have kids that are and you don’t have the “Anti Michael Bay” stance, then see it and have fun at the movies.

This new version of the Turtles takes new liberties to the origin story, which surprised me in a way cause the earlier rumors are not true, at least in this movie. I won’t say what those rumors were in this review in case you weren’t paying attention to the earlier backlash over a year ago:-) I wasn’t wowed by the look of the new turtles from the trailers and posters I saw prior to the film. But as the movie went on and the characteristics of each turtle developed, I got use to their look and mannerisms. I was pleased with the new movies version of Splinter. If I had one complaint about the movie, it was the look of the master villain of Shredder. However! I was pleased with how bass ass Shredders fighting was and how formidable a foe he was in the film. As for Megan Fox’s portrayal of April O’Neil… She was OK, not bad. I would had preferred she was a redhead like the original April, but I got over that as the movie went on.

So there’s my take on the new TMNT movie. I enjoyed it without huge expectations. I suggest you do the same. By the way, Michelangelo has always been my favorite turtle. And still is!!

Sledge Hammer!

You’re awesome… and old if you remember this show. Plus, you might be in love with your gun.

Begin Again Movie Review

Plot: “Songwriting duo and couple Gretta (Keira Knightley) and Dave (Adam Levine) decided to seek their fortune in NYC. When Dave is signed by a major label, temptation proves too powerful for him to resist and the couple call it quits. Crestfallen, Gretta fights to get back on her feet until one night, while performing in the East Village, she catches the attention of Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a once-respected music executive who’s since fallen on hard times. Enchanted by Gretta’s powerful voice and skillful songwriting, Dan convinces her to join him in a collaboration that will transform them both over the course of one unforgettable summer.”

This movie falls under the label of “another great summer movie getting looked over because everyone is seeing the blockbusters instead”. This movie is a hidden gem. It was so enjoyable with a great cast and wonderful music! Also, the city of New York is the other character of this film. If you love music and NYC, this movie is for you.

It was refreshing to see Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers) and Keira Knightly (Pirates of the Caribbean) playing roles in this heart felt non blockbusterish indy type of feel good movie. The soundtrack and original songs in this movie were catchy and emotional to each of the scenes they were attached too. You probably won’t be able to catch this film in the theater cause it’s on it’s way to video soon, but at least, please catch it when it does!
